Glossary

user

Short Definition
An individual who interacts with a computer, software, or system. The term is often used to refer to someone accessing digital products or services (e.g., user accounts, user profiles).
Relevance
One of the promising aspects of technology is its potential to be shaped by the people who use it. However, the role of a user in tech spaces is often oversimplified, overlooking the nuanced needs and identities that people bring to their interactions. By viewing users as active participants with varying needs based on intersectionality, cultural specificity, and accessibility, tech systems can be designed to support rather than restrict engagement. Recognizing users as collaborators in tech development ensures that tools and platforms are responsive to the diverse and intersectional realities of those using them, particularly for disability justice and historically exploited communities.
