Short Definition
A metaphor used in disability communities (originating from the Spoon Theory) to describe energy or capacity to complete tasks. Each task requires a certain number of “spoons,” representing limited physical, emotional, or mental energy.
Relevance
The spoons concept, acknowledging limited energy, is central to creating systems that reduce the burden on individuals, especially those with disabilities or chronic illnesses. While many platforms fail to fully consider these needs, working within what’s available while advocating for better, more accessible options is essential. By designing tools that are less taxing and more intuitive, the digital environment can become more accessible, sustainable, and considerate of individual energy levels.
