Attiwonderonk

Short Definition
Attiwonderonk refers to the territory of the Neutral Nation, an Iroquoian-speaking confederacy that once lived in what is now southern Ontario. The name means “people of a slightly different language.” Called “Neutral” by French settlers, they did not take sides in early colonial conflicts between other Indigenous Nations. Today, this territory is recognized as part of the broader Indigenous history of the region, though the Nation itself is now dispersed.
Relevance
Acknowledging Attiwonderonk territory helps recognize the histories of Indigenous Nations that colonial systems have tried to erase. Naming this territory in land acknowledgements and educational contexts supports broader efforts toward truth-telling, historical accuracy, and Indigenous sovereignty. It also highlights that Indigenous presence and governance existed long before current colonial borders and continue to matter today.
