underserved communities

Short Definition
Groups or populations that have limited access to resources, services, and opportunities due to systemic barriers like poverty, discrimination, or geographic isolation.
Relevance
Underserved communities have long faced barriers to technology access due to systemic issues like cost, infrastructure gaps, and limited digital literacy, all rooted in colonialism, racism, and ableism. However, communities most affected by oppression have the experience and capacity to lead transformative change. Many Black, Indigenous, and disability justice movements are already at the forefront, creating community-driven tech solutions that challenge exclusionary practices and promote tech justice. The challenge remains in bridging the digital divide while recognizing that those most impacted by these systems are also best equipped to reshape them. The real opportunity is in supporting these efforts, understanding that the future of technology should be shaped by those who have been historically excluded but are now leading the way in reimagining how tech can work for everyone.
