Glossary

pretendian

Short Definition
A non-Indigenous person falsely claiming Indigenous identity, often for personal gain or access to resources and credibility.
Relevance
In tech-informed spaces, this behavior can lead to the exploitation and erasure of authentic Indigenous voices. Platforms, technologies, and arts organizations need to remain vigilant in preventing cultural appropriation and misrepresentation. It is critical to ensure that Indigenous identities are respected, especially in digital and creative spaces. Arts workers and institutions have a responsibility to verify and support genuine Indigenous representation, creating environments where Indigenous cultural specificity is protected and Indigenous voices can thrive without fear of exploitation or appropriation.
