land acknowledgement

Short Definition
A formal statement recognizing Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of the land, often used at events or gatherings to honor their connection to the land and acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization.
Relevance
While land acknowledgements have become more common, they often feel performative without accompanying action. The challenge is moving beyond statements to real commitments that address colonial legacies. A hopeful way forward is for land acknowledgements to be paired with tangible actions that support Indigenous sovereignty and rights.
