sonic cartography: tracing the sounds of everyday life is for anyone curious about sound, field recording, or the city as a listening environment. No audio experience required.
Over the span of the workshop, participants will:
- Explore guiding questions about attention and sound, what textures emerge from close listening, which sounds signal movement versus stillness, and what we learn by tuning into the overlooked.
- Traverse the area surrounding InterAccess with field recorders, capturing quotidian and spectacular sounds of the city, background hums, motion and friction, overheard conversation.
- Collaboratively weave individual audio recordings into a shared sonic collage, discovering which sounds rise to dominance when threads are woven together.
Participants can be absolute beginners, no prior recording or sound design experience is needed.
Through these initiatives, we aim to give participants further opportunities to build their new media arts practice and engage with Toronto's creative communities.
About the Facilitators
Based between Cairo, Toronto, and Abu Dhabi, Farida Rady is a researcher, artist, and writer currently pursuing a PhD in urban planning at the University of Toronto. Farida explores questions of urban governance, housing justice, migrations, memory, and the poetics of place. She explores these interests across the spectrum of scholarly and creative processes, having published in and exhibited at Pioneer Works, Antipode, Xpace, Contemporary Image Collective Cairo, New York University Abu Dhabi, South Asian Visual Arts Centre, and Cairo Art Book Fair, amongst others. Through various research/creation practices, including counter-mapping, participatory and arts-based research and community engagement practices, alternative photography, and legal analyses, Farida prioritizes embodied and sited pedagogy and collaborative learning processes.
Joanna Delos Reyes (she/her) is a first-generation filipina-canadian settler, whose family first settled in Malvern, Scarborough. Joanna is a multidisciplinary artist whose research and practice explore sound as a form of counter-archiving, collective memory, and space-making. Working across music, socially engaged art, and community collaboration, she is a member of the Polaris Music Prize–shortlisted and Juno Award–nominated bands Pantayo and Yamantaka//Sonic Titan.
Her work engages queer of colour spatial practices with a focus on how artists shape social and cultural life. Her writing has been featured in Northwestern University Press' Diasporic Intimacies: Queer Filipinos and Canadian Imaginaries and the Marvellous Grounds anthology. Alongside her artistic practice, she works in the public sector in parks and recreation, leading community engagement on new parks projects. She holds a Master’s in Environmental Studies (Planning) from York University and undergraduate from University of Guelph in Art History and Art Theory and Criticism.
Accessibility Information: We are located on the second floor of the building, which is accessible by two flights of stairs or an elevator. The front entrance has an automatic push door and is accessible by ramp or a short flight of stairs. Inside, all InterAccess facilities are on the same level, including a single-user accessible washroom.
