More-than-Human Resonance: Interactive Bio-Data Sonification
In-person at InterAccess | Register here
Registration Fee: FREE
3 – 5 PM: Virtual talk, followed by a Q&A (online – open to all)
5 PM: In-person biomaterial making and experimentation (in-person – spots limited)
Join artist Tosca Terán to experience biodata streaming through modular synthesizers from plants and fungal mycelium, to create a more-than-human derived soundscape.
Participants will have the opportunity to place electrodes on plants, themselves, or each other, allowing their bio-data to be transformed into music and visuals.
Bio-sonification is a field of sonification where data from living organisms is translated into sounds. By using sensors to capture real-time data and converting it into musical elements such as pitch and volume, bio-sonification transforms imperceptible biological processes into an audible format, providing insights into these phenomena.
Following the participation, Nanotopia (Terán and her musical partner, Andrei Gravelle), will perform a live, improved set working with biodata from the mycelium.
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Tosca Terán, aka Nanotopia, is an interdisciplinary artist. She describes herself as a human holobiont whose work is a confluence of art, ecology, and craft. Her work has been featured at The Harwood Museum, SOFA New York, The Toronto Design Exchange, MOCA Toronto, The Ontario Science Centre, Music Works, Vector Festival, Studio Art & Craft Canada, SONICA21, Glasna Music Magazine, The Mushroom UK, NAISA (New Adventures In Sound Art), Fermynwoods Contemporary Art UK, The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Ars Electronica.
Her MyceliaVR performance was a special event at The 78th Venice International Film Festival alongside Jean-Michel Jarre. Mycelia opened for AMAZE./Berlin21. Their Mycelia experience was nominated for and won the Spirit of the Festival award at the Raindance Film Festival.
Tosca has received funding support and residencies from the Goethe-Institut Montreal, The Canada Arts Council, BigCi Environmental Award Australia, Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, California Arts Council, SUNY Buffalo’s Coalesce Centre for Biological Art and LOBE Spatial Audio Centre for her immersive, expanded reality, nonhuman bio-sonification projects. Tosca is an invited tutor for the Venice Biennale Cinema College VR.
This FREE workshop is presented as part of the Sustainable Practices series, made possible through funding from the Microsoft Toronto Community Fund, supported by Microsoft.
