Join us Wednesday, January 27 for our seasonal community mixer. This mixer will feature an artist talk, open discussion, and hands-on demos exploring what it actually looks like to de-Google your life. Free and open to all.
We'll kick things off with a talk (about an hour) introducing the presenter's work in art and tech, followed by a walkthrough of their new web art piece, Exodus Big Techius: Root to Leaving Google/Apple/Microsoft for the Collective Open Source.
From there, it opens up into a group conversation. Come with your own experiences, tips, or questions about untangling from Big Tech. Depending on what people are curious about, expect some impromptu demos too, which might touch on:
- Switching your default search engine
- Moving your bookmarks to a new browser
- Tech co-ops, and how to become a member
- Nextcloud for “mutual” or “collective” hosting, explained
- De-googling your phone
- FOSS alternatives to Big Tech tools
- Migrating to Linux
No experience necessary, just curiosity. Participants are welcome to bring their own laptops should they wish to share their own projects with the group, or co-work on some of the material discussed.
This seasonal gathering offers a welcoming space for equity deserving community members to connect, mingle, discuss your latest projects, and spark potential collaborations.
About the Host
Cookie Brunel is an artist and makerspace technician working with limitless materials and formats. They seek ways of being anti-capitalist in tech and digital artmaking, exploring movements such as de-growth, de-googling, permacomputing, and the right to repair. Cookie organizes and hosts the “Open Source Computer Club” with the Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of Toronto. This spring, they will be exhibiting art at the Open Hardware Summit in Berlin. They are also currently developing more free and in-person community events surrounding digital sovereignty and leaving “Big Tech”. Find Cookie if you are interested in attending!
