Larry McDermott is Algonquin from Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation and the Executive Director of Plenty Canada. A leader in environmental stewardship and Indigenous rights, he serves with organizations including the International Indigenous Forum for Biodiversity, Ontario Biodiversity Council, Ontario Professional Foresters Association, Healing Place partnership, and Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Network, and co-chairs the Lanark County Safety and Well-Being Plan. A former three-time Mayor of Lanark Highlands, McDermott was also Chair of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Rural Forum, Commissioner with the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and a member of multiple species-at-risk recovery teams. He has represented his Nation in comprehensive land claims, and is certified as a tree marker and butternut assessor. Honored with a Doctor of Laws from the University of Guelph, McDermott was a longtime student of Algonquin Elder Grandfather William Commanda. He lives with his wife Nancy on 500 acres of Algonquin land along the Mississippi River.
