The Mi'kmaw Place Names project started in 2010 to document millenia of Mi'kmaw presence within Mi'kma'ki (most commonly known as Nova Scotia), home to Mi'kmaq First Nations. The project is aimed towards raising public awareness of this rich history. It provides geographical representation and archaeological information of Mi'kmaq Peoples' deep connection to the land.

Relevance

This project documents Mi’kmaq place names across Mi'kma'ki to raise awareness of the land’s history and the Mi’kmaq Peoples’ enduring connection to it.• Tech Literacy & Accessibility: The project educates users on Mi’kmaq history and fosters tech literacy through accessible, map-based digital interfaces.• Reducing Harm in New Media: By prioritizing accurate representation, this project counters colonial narratives, reducing harm by honoring Indigenous knowledge.• Data & Knowledge Stewardship: The atlas serves as a cultural repository, supporting Indigenous-led preservation of place-based knowledge and history.
