Create safer tech-informed environments
Trauma-informed guidelines, platform descriptions.
1. Pick a Tech-Informed Space, Project, or Artifact: Choose a hybrid, digital, or in-person space, project, or artifact you’ve encountered, are currently working on, or have worked on before. This could be a conference, an interactive installation, a community event, or an online platform.2. Identify 1-5 Safety Improvements: Identify 1-5 ways to make the space, project, or artifact safer for vulnerable users. Examples include:• Adding content or trigger warnings in hybrid or digital spaces to prevent harm.• Offering alternative participation methods (e.g., anonymous submissions, quiet rooms, virtual options) to accommodate different sensory and emotional needs.3. Explain Why These Changes Matter: For each safety improvement, reflect on why it is important and the potential impact on marginalized users. Consider how these adjustments improve emotional safety, increase access, and promote participation.• Example: Adding quiet rooms in an in-person space allows attendees experiencing sensory overload to step away, helping them feel more comfortable and able to participate.4. Share Your Suggestions: Present one of your suggested improvements and explain its impact on the emotional and psychological safety of vulnerable users, whether the space is hybrid, digital, or in-person.
