Icebreaker: Land Acknowledgement

Objective

To have participants reflect on their personal and living relationship to land and the Indigenous communities local to the land they live and work on.

Setup

Paper, pen, laptop for research

Instructions

1. Where are you located? ◦ What is the Indigenous name and history of that place? Refer to https://native-land.ca/ as a starting point if needed.2. Where do you come from? ◦ This can include your family’s geographical or cultural background.3. What’s your current relationship to the Indigenous communities local to your location? ◦ Examples: ▪ “I am a settler who is learning about the local Indigenous history and working to support Indigenous-led initiatives in my community.” ▪ “I am Indigenous to another region, but I have built relationships with local Indigenous communities through collaboration on cultural and environmental projects.” ▪ “I have not yet engaged with the Indigenous communities here but am seeking ways to learn more and get involved respectfully.”4. What’s something you’ll do this week to grow/improve your relationship with the Indigenous communities local to where you live and work? ◦ Examples: ▪ “I will work on improving my pronunciation of local Indigenous place names and terms.” ▪ “I will read part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report to better understand the history and its impact.” ▪ “I will donate to or spread the word about an Indigenous-led organization or cause in my community.”
