| This work is to establish a point of entrance for Black women Artists seeking a presence on the internet. Recognizing that our cultures are already being part of the global culture I feel that the internet is a tool to facilate interaction allowing for a truly global participation. "I create, write, think art out of compulsion." I am excited " by the unfamiliar or the unexplored" that often manifests itself as an obsession of my mind and soul ... There are tremendous critical issues in order to live as an artist and to continue to produce. In the acceptance of my work I have had to contend with the exclusion - lack of interest- of my/our work from main stream institutions. My venue has been the alternative art community. This two-edged sword gives support to my growth and an audience for my work, at the same time a place to hide seemingly fulfilling my artistic conscience yet avoiding the commercial, mainstream that negates me. Creation occurs behind door and in solitude that is "schizophrenic" and inserting references to ... The Diaspora is a greater international zone where people like myself are creating art for people , art that is a part of our lives , art that is necessary for us, for it gives us a broader, richer outlook on life. Within this perceived unity, there is also diversity But it is experience born out of millions of people who were forced to migrate to lands unknown they were torn away from things familier and then converted into marketable commodities. The buyers of these commodities could be generous and kind, or they could inflict unrelenting pain and suffering, even death. all part of the multinational post-modern pot-pourri - but from the uncool angsts of loneliness, passion, commitment, and above all, mortality. in a quest for the means to rebel against her own commodification sits uneasily between past and future in a location - not of her own choice - at once her own. The people of diaspora, therefore, all carry, to varying degrees: "an opposition...between a state of alienation and a desire to return...a junction of past and present, the exotic and the . . . everyday." 'culture shock' has a unique and more lasting impact on the construction of Diasporic populations. |
