As part of my ongoing series of showcasing creative commons netlabels that I randomly come across in my internet travels I have decided to talk about my most recently found netlabel. Resting Bell is a Berlin, Germany based netlabel, founded by Christian Roth. The music found on the website is meditative, experimental, electric, peaceful and most of all beautiful. As a netlabel, Resting Bell releases music in MP3 format under the creative commons license for free. But in addition to the netlabel, Resting Bell is a blog with recommendations and features on the field of actual breathtaking music, art or other creative output.
One of the more recent releases on the netlabel is by an up and coming Canadian experimental artist Segue aka Jordan Sauer from Vancouver, Canada. His sound is a patchwork of textures and tones with a focus on the interplay of timbre. These sounds are created through the blending of various instruments (12-string guitar, piano, violin, melodica, glockenspiel, various percussive instruments) and incidental found sounds. His recent release on the label titled “a glass darkly” is an absolutely beautiful, meditative and touching piece of music. Haunting melodies, guitar- and piano-miniatures, field recordings, string-drones are blended together carefully to a 22-minute expedition, where every sound evolves slowly.
