Nick Stedman & Kate Hartman: Natural Interaction

This coming dorkbot Nick and Kate will be presenting projects that bridge between natural and cultural systems: After Deep Blue, a modular robot system that ambiguously moves between endearing and sinister; Botanicalls, a hardware suite that gives plants new agency, and the Glacier Embracing Suit, a vehicle to become more intimate with sublimely indifferent nature.

These projects are all really neat, and this should be a particularly fun dbot.

Open Studio this Wednesday, August 26, 7-9 PM

Monday, August 24th, 2009

It’s like show-and-tell for grownups.
Bring your projects, or your problems (of a technical nature, that is).

Recent projects people were working on at Open Studio: tagtool , arduinome , Pure Data window projections, bike-powered xbee-talking Atari Punk Console . What will next week hold?

Paper LED calculator

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

The number one electronics question I get asked is “how do I calculate a resistor for an LED?”  While there are some great on-line LED calculators, I love this paper calculator from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories.  Paper  slider-rule calculators have a long history, and there are plenty of interesting ones, such as this one to compute the effects of atomic blasts, and this one to calculate exposures with flashbulbs.

THREE MONTHS OF BETA – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FROM MEMBERS

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre is pleased to announce the launch of beta – a series of member exhibitions – and invites members to submit proposals of new work, or work that is still in progress, for short exhibition slots between September and December 2009.

beta provides InterAccess members an opportunity to exhibit and test work that is new – or even still in development. For anyone who wonders what’s going on in the studio, these exhibitions strengthen the connection between the production and exhibition of new media work at InterAccess by showcasing members’ studio projects in the gallery.

The beta programme launched in 2007 with beta in Beta, an exhibition of work by Malka Greene, Dave Kemp, Mark Andre Pennock, and Niknaz Tavakolian. Based on the success of that pilot project, InterAccess is making beta a regular part of its exhibition schedule.

Not a current member? Now is the perfect time to join a thriving community of artists who are committed to expanding the cultural space of technology. To become a member of InterAccess, contact Alex Snukal (alex.snukal@interaccess.org) or call 416.599.7206 to check the status of your membership.

Artists exhibiting in beta will be entirely responsible for their own installation and arranging for technical assistance. There are a variety of technical assistance programs offered at InterAccess, and one of these may be what you need.

Submission Guidelines:
- all submissions must be from members
- an artist statement (1 page maximum)
- a project summary
- CV
- visual or audio support material with detailed descriptions of content. You can submit up to 10 digital jpegs, 1 URL address (please indicate your preferred browser and platform), and a maximum of 1 VHS tapes, CDs or DVDs (NTSC). Please Note: We do not accept slides.
- a detailed list of all support materials
- a self-addressed, sufficiently stamped envelope if you want your submission package returned.
Deadline: Friday, August 28th, 2009 – 5:00PM.
InterAccess will also accept packages postmarked on that date. Please prepare and cue your materials.
