I went grocery shopping for the first time in almost two weeks. I’m back in my house for the first time since 10am this morning, after getting about 5 hours sleep. I can’t see straight. I can’t think straight.

I left InterAccess at 1AM on Monday, deciding that debugging so late was a losing battle. Today I continued to lose that battle. These are the moments where I wonder why I didn’t take up photography.  I start unproductively pondering how to do this better next time, why I didn’t do this right the first time, and today while I was waiting for a glue gun to heat up I hopped into my email to find a colleague reminding me that for today, I pledged that I would write a blog about a woman working in technology whom I admire. This nice little note drew my head up from a pile of wires and had to remind me, in a broader context, why exactly I’ve decided to do this with my life.

Speaking Out Loud and Netherlands Media Arts Institute

Friday, November 14th, 2008

This came across my desk and I thought it would interest some readers. I’m fairly drawn to anything that questions the larger structures of language, action and meaning. Hopefully you enjoy this as well! Please read on….

Explicit Content Only by Evan Roth

Participating artists: Tudor Bratu (RO), Tim Etchells (UK) and Vlatka Horvat (CRO/US), Linda Hilfling (DEN), Michael Hoepfel (DE), Jaromil (IT/NL) and Jodi (NL), KH Jeron (DE), Christoph Keller (DE), Manu Luksch (AT) and Mukul Patel (UK), Evan Roth (US), Charles Sandison (UK), Trikoton (DE).

Performances at the opening: Blaxtar (NL), Bas Boettcher (DE) and Omer Krieger (IL)

Speaking Out Loud centers on the processes of both ‘thinking out loud’ and ’speaking out’. Thinking out loud describes the associative, dynamic and rather uncontrolled process of simultaneously thinking and speaking about a particular topic. We think out loud to make a suggestion, to put forward an idea or a thought rather than to make a claim. Speaking Out Loud advocates this free and creative process of thinking out loud through artworks that enable a playful and surprising experience of language. This happens in the form of what could be summarised as experimental language exercises or canny transformations and alternations of language.

Art Basel & UBS Come Under IRS & Senate Investigation

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

UBS under IRS investigation
The IRS has asked the Swiss government to aid in the investigation of International Banking & Investment group UBS and their overseas tax havens programs which some have reported amount to intentional tax evasion and fraud.

Art Basel is mentioned as the go to location for foreign employees of UBS to illegally recruit wealthy individuals to help them avoid reporting billions of US dollars in assets. Clients were at times told to use code words when communicating with UBS. Testimony states that roughly 80 UBS bankers traveled to the US 4-6 times a year to pitch the bank’s secretive services to clients at upscale events as Miami’s annual Art Basel fair.

The bankers used encrypted computers, devised codes for their clients’ identities, told Customs agents the trips were for vacations, not business, and advised clients to place jewelry, paintings and other assets in Swiss safe deposit boxes, Birkenfeld testified in June, when he pleaded guilty to helping California billionaire Igor Olenicoff evade $7.2 million in U.S. taxes.

Former LGT computer technician Heinrich Kieber helped tax investigators around the world flesh out those statistics by handing over data on approximately 1,400 of the bank’s clients.

Kieber is in hiding as Liechtenstein authorities seek him on charges of violating secrecy laws.
