Making sure to use twisted pairs and DC isolation should be fine.  TPC
sends multi-megabit datastreams much more than 500' over signifigantly
noisier paths.

Induced spikes will manifest as common mode potentials, which will be
cancelled by DC isolation.  If there are concerns the spikes might be
big enough to burn though capacitor dielectric or transformer wire
insulation (ie. lightning) then the system becomes much more involved.
I am assuming this sort of thing is not a going concern.
