Off the top of my head I would suggest the following:

Behavior resulting from artifice that contrives, by
dependence upon ongoing compounding internal and
external interactions that are largely pre-defined,
to transcend its own contrivance.

(Note that these interactions can be mechanical,
chemical, biological, cultural, social, electronic,
software-driven, etc.)
