Build the VGA Loom Video Synthesizer

In-person at InterAccess - Register here

In this intermediate electronics workshop, participants will construct a circuit and build their own video synthesizer, a device that electronically creates a video signal and can be used in real time performance

The VGA Loom project is a Video Synthesizer that produces imagery reminiscent of weaving designs and early computer graphics. It uses no microcontrollers for the pattern generation, relying only on simple digital logic devices. The VGA Loom is glitchy, it has a character that only hardware can produce.

Participants will construct the VGA Loom and be taught its functionalities over the course of the workshop. At the end each participant will have their own working VGA Loom to explore and utilize.

Workshop Prerequisites

  • Experience in circuit construction and soldering is highly recommended.

Materials

  • Participants will be provided with all necessary materials. This workshop is subject to a $30 material fee, included in the ticket price, to directly covers the cost of materials.

About the Facilitator

Phil Baljeu is a Video artist and instrument designer based in Toronto, Ontario. His artistic practice uses obsolete and esoteric technologies, often self designed and built, to deconstruct portraiture and reconstruct it in to new forms. His work with LZX Industries as an instrument designer has yielded the Castle modular synthesizer series, and the Fortress synthesizer module. Both Castle and Fortress are based on early personal computer graphics concepts, with all the quirks and limitations of such technologies. Phil Baljeu has taught workshops, and performed live across North America and Europe.
